‘Are we out of our minds?’

Imagine discovering something that changes your life. That is exactly what happened when Michiel became fascinated by binaural beats and Solfeggio frequencies about eight years ago. Jet, however, was not convinced at all. "You are not going to do weird things to your brain, are you?!" she asked. Little did she know that one day they would be running MindStateLabs together. Imagine how much can change when curiosity meets creativity. Discover the story behind these two busy minds.

“Together, we can create anything”

How did the two of you meet?

Jet: It feels like another lifetime. We met almost twenty years ago on an ordinary day in August. I was working as a Designer of Special Products for the internationally renowned lifestyle magazine Happinez.

Michiel: I had just walked into the office to put the finishing touches on their new website. At the time I was working as a web developer for an internet company.

Jet: My first thought was actually, "Hmm... an IT guy. Maybe he can help me install my new MacBook." Neither of us had any idea that this chance meeting would become the start of the rest of our lives together.

Life became a little busier after that...

Michiel: You could say that. We built a life together. We moved in, started a family, built our own home, travelled whenever we could, developed new careers, and tried to make time for family, friends, and most importantly, each other.

Jet: Like every family, we sometimes struggled to keep all the balls in the air. Finding balance is not always easy when life moves fast.

Where did the idea for MindStateLabs come from?

Michiel: It actually started with curiosity. About eight years ago I became fascinated by binaural beats and later Solfeggio frequencies. I discovered how sound could help me focus more deeply, relax after busy days, or fall asleep much faster whenever I needed it.

Jet: I thought it sounded a bit scary, to be honest. I remember saying, "You are not going to do weird things to your brain, are you?" I was definitely the sceptic.

Michiel: Fair enough!

Jet: But the more I learned about the science behind it, the more my opinion changed. Now I regularly use MindStateApp myself. Sometimes to unwind after a busy day, sometimes to get into a creative flow when I am working on a new design concept.

“They weren't interested in the technology behind it,
they simply noticed they could study with more focus”

When did you realise you were creating something bigger than just an app?

Michiel: That happened when our youngest son started using the focus sessions while studying for school. He has a neurodivergent brain, and they really helped him concentrate.

Jet: Then his friends started using the app too. They were not interested in the technology behind it, they simply noticed they could study with more focus.

Michiel: That was the moment we thought, what if we could make this available to everyone?

What makes MindState different?

Jet: We wanted to create something that was genuinely helpful, beautifully designed, and affordable. No complicated settings. No overwhelming interface.

Michiel: At the same time, we wanted people to have complete freedom. Users can personalise every session to their own needs, save their favourite combinations, and even share them with others. Everyone's brain is different, so every sound experience should be different too.

What motivates you today?

Michiel: We have learned that true well-being is not about doing more. It is about making space to rest, spend time in nature, and stay connected with the people who matter most.

Jet: We genuinely believe that rest, nature, and meaningful connections are essential for a healthy and balanced life. But we also know from our own experience that making enough room for those things is not always easy.

Michiel: That is exactly why we created the MindState apps. Not to replace a healthy lifestyle, but to complement it. They are there whenever you need a little more focus, a moment of calm, a creative boost, or a better night's sleep.

Create your own healing frequencies and let sound guide you toward focus, calm, recovery, and flow.
